Common questions about the AQI to Cigarettes calculator

The U.S. Air Quality Index reports the highest index among measured pollutants such as PM2.5, ozone, and particle pollution. This calculator only converts a reading when PM2.5 is the pollutant driving the AQI; AQI systems and breakpoints differ by country.

The tool treats the input as a PM2.5 pollutant AQI, converts it with current EPA breakpoints, and applies Berkeley Earth's rough population health-impact comparison: 22 µg/m³ sustained for 24 hours per cigarette-equivalent. Other pollutant AQIs cannot be converted as PM2.5.

It is an evidence-informed risk-communication estimate, not particle mass, inhaled dose, cigarettes actually smoked, a personal-risk estimate, or a diagnosis.

According to the EPA, AQI values of 0-50 are considered 'Good', 51-100 are 'Moderate', and anything above 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups or worse. The lower the AQI, the better the air quality.

It's recommended to check your local AQI daily, especially if you live in an area prone to air pollution or if you have respiratory sensitivities. Air quality can vary significantly throughout the day.

During high AQI periods, stay indoors when possible, use air purifiers, wear appropriate masks when outdoors, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. Keep windows closed when outdoor air quality is poor.
